If the leafs don't pick top 3 I'll be pissed. I'm really just praying the Habs don't win it.

I think that's part of the issue Hendo.

The worst team (it seems recently) doesn't get the 1st pick. Not Edmonton's fault. Just another ball dropped by the NHL.

Draft isn't just about helping bad teams get better, it's also about giving struggling teams a face to market as a sign of good things to come. First overall going to the same team over and over stops that from happening.

Bad teams still get their players. The Sabres got Eichel. Someone is going to get Laine. As great as the 1st Overall pick is, players in the top 3 are usually damned good. Complaining about a random draft is a waste of breath, imo. If team X is going in the tank because team Y is picking 1st, that's a problem.

"I’ll be expecting 29 other fan-bases to roll their eyes."

I was already rolling my eyes last year after hearing all summer from Oiler fans (again) how they are going to be the best team and challenge for cup this year, only to fall out of the race by Nov. ..........again.

So ya', I'll be rolling my eyes the moment you guys start trolling every other thread pumping your teams tires after another lottery win. Rinse, spit, repeat. You'll be in lottery conversation again next year.

Best defence in the NHL I would love to ask Burkie how that rebuild is going.

Should only be allowed to pick 1st overall twice in a span of 5 years. If said team gets picked in the lottery the lottery is re done

I'm not sure why you think the Oilers picking first this year wouldn't generate change when it already has in the form of the current lotto. You already acknowledge that and yet somehow believe that more change won't come if the Oilers pick first again?

That's being rather hopeful. Personally I agree that they shouldn't go too far. I don't even think the current system should exist. Bad teams draft high and in most circumstances move quickly towards turning the franchise around.

Just because one team can't do that doesn't mean the entire draft system should be made into a completely random mess where bad teams can't even reliably pick high in the draft.

It shouldn't....but it probably will. The NHL made one knee-jerk reaction to the Oilers winning the McDavid lotto, fully expect them to make another if they get the first pick in this case.

Frankly if the worst that happens if that Oiler's Rule about not picking too high too often....that's probably the lesser of all possible evils.

The Oilers weren't "lucky" as much as they've been horribly incompetent. At scouting, at managing, at coaching, at everything.
The lottery is the NHL's version of a guaranteed minimum income. No matter how incompetent the management, no matter how lousy they run their business, the League can't afford to have teams fall off the face of the earth so the more a team fails the more the league is going to feel the need to "prop them up.".
If the NHL had any objective other than the bottom line they'd institute a relegation structure so that teams that consistently underperform could play each other all season and the better managed teams could provide serious fans with consistently entertaining games instead of the watered down pap that they want us to believe is the "best hockey league in the world."

FFS Hendo. Post a blog at the usual time so I have a chance at being "Fist".
Also thanks for hitting the nail on the head in the blog, and thus opening the floodgates for posts about how the lottery needs to be changed because of mathematical probabilities, and because well, the Oilers ruin picks.

It's called balance in a rebuild. We have good young fwd's and good young D. Not just 10 top 5 fwd's and no D. Give us the 3 more years you guys have had to rebuild and we'll see where we're at. We've had 3 drafts to your 6 and we're already ahead of you. Because, you know, our GM tries other methods of building a contender than failing for first (Oilers mantra) over and over again.

Really??? November? Yeah for the first 5 years but not this last year. You may be thinking of your team there, bub.
And come on, you had like 2 guys trolling your thread with that crap and one of them is now on Permanent Vacation.

Their goaltending really let them down this year. I'd still take Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Giordano, Brodie and Hamilton as my core over McDavid, Draisaitl, Hall, RNH, Eberle and Yak.

Which reaction was this? The rules for this years draft lotto, were in place well before the Oilers were rightfully rewarded with getting McDavid last year.
